And while the North Carolina couple successfully walked the streets of Glasgow, Bonifacio and Thessaloniki, receiving those two $500,000 checks into their savings account was a comedy of errors.

“He was so excited he tore it up,” Kim recalled of her husband of 19 years. “So we had to go to the bank and kind of tape it up.”

However, from that point on they stuck to their game plan, even delaying replacing Penn’s car because they didn’t want to go too crazy with their prize money.

Instead, “we paid taxes,” Kim said. They donated and shared another 30 percent, and saved about 28 percent for their daughter. Lola17 years old and son Penn Charles, 14 years old, go to college. “And I think that left us just under 10 thousand.”

It was then that they realized that the world was waiting for them. So, Kim continued, “last year we took the kids on a trip to France.”
