The endlessly frustrating mystery of what happened to Madeleine McCann
As the 14th anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance approaches in 2021, Gerry and Kate McCann posted on Find Madeleine’s website, the couple never joined social networks: “Every May is difficult – a reminder of the years that have passed, of the years lost or stolen together. This year it is especially important because we have to celebrate Madeleine’s 18th birthday. Enough said.”
A Met rep confirmed to E! News that McCann’s case remained open, but they were unable to comment further on their active investigation – and it remains a missing person investigation. Clarence Mitchella longtime spokesman for the McCanns, did not respond to interview requests at the time.
A few months later, on April 21, 2022, prosecutors in Faro, Portugal, said they had an official suspect, without giving a name but saying they were acting at the request of German authorities and in coordination with English investigators.
The next day on a website dedicated to finding the eldest McCann child. wrote“We welcome the news that the Portuguese authorities have declared a German “argido” in connection with the disappearance of our beloved daughter Madeleine. This reflects progress in the investigation being carried out by Portuguese, German and British authorities. We were kept up to date with the Metropolitan Police.
“It is important to note that Arguido has not yet been charged with any specific crime related to Madeleine’s disappearance. While the likelihood of this may be slim, we remain hopeful that Madeleine is still alive and we will be reunited with her. “
