Looking Glass launches new 3D display
looking glass creates a bizarre-looking mixed reality screen that makes objects appear 3D without the need for special glasses. Today, the company is launching his two new displays, including his $4,000 16-inch mode. There’s also a 32-inch display, and it comes with a price tag that says, “If you asked me how much it would cost, I wouldn’t buy it.” The display is available in both landscape and portrait orientations, providing flexibility for a variety of content formats and applications.
The previous 15-inch model cost $6,000, so at least prices are coming down a bit. A few years ago, the company also launched a $350 holographic digital photo frame, along with software that allows holiday snapshots to pop off the screen.
The innovative display provides stunning group 3D visualization without the need for a headset. This means professionals working with 3D content can work without the inconvenience or fatigue associated with installing additional hardware. The company says its products are designed for cutting-edge visualization for design, engineering, education, research and medical professionals.
The new display joins the recently announced Looking Glass Go, completing the company’s portfolio of spatial products. Looking Glass Go converts his 2D photos into his 3D memory, while the larger format is tailored to the needs of his XR developers and professionals.
Another benefit of using these displays is that you can view content in groups. This is especially useful in collaborative contexts. According to the company, up to 100 people can experience the content at the same time.
The display can display a wide range of media, including holographic images, high-quality video, and real-time applications, and features gesture-based controls, eliminating the need to interact with a computer screen and further enhancing the immersive experience.
Looking Glass offers several options for content creation, including plugins for Unity, Unreal, Blender, and WebXR. It also features a 3D model importer and a software development kit for creating custom holographic content.
