Spotify experiments with Spanish-speaking AI DJ
Spotify’s addition of an AI DJ feature that introduces users to personalized song selections was the company’s first step into the future of AI. Spotify is currently developing an alternative version of its Spanish-speaking DJs.
References to the new AI DJ were discovered within the app’s code by a tech veteran and reverse engineer. Chris MessinaHe found signs indicating that users could switch the AI DJ’s language from English to Spanish, as well as references to the new DJ’s name, “DJ Livi.” The code also suggests that this AI DJ will be available in Mexico.
Assuming the feature rolls out, DJ Livi will be the first language expansion for the feature, as the existing AI DJ (DJ X) launched globally last year but was only released in English.
When reached for comment, Spotify did not dispute the findings.
“At Spotify, we regularly run a number of tests designed to help our users express themselves through the music they love,” a company spokesperson said. “Some of these will ultimately pave the way for broader user experiences, while others will only serve as important learnings. We have nothing further to share about future plans at this time.” they added.
In other words, Spotify isn’t yet ready to announce a clear release plan for its Spanish-speaking AI DJ. At this point, this feature is only in the experimental stage. But it would make sense for Spotify to focus on this demographic. The worldwide popularity of Spanish, Spanish is the most popular language after English, Chinese and Hindi. It is also widely spoken in the United States, Spotify’s main market. Over 42 million people Spanish speakers at home. Once this feature is released, presumably anyone will be able to set their AI DJ to Spanish.
AI DJ isn’t the only thing Spotify is testing new AI technology with. The company is also experimenting with using AI to create ads read by podcast hosts and personalized AI playlists that can be created using prompts. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has also hinted at his plans to use AI across the business in areas such as personalization, advertising, and podcast summarization.
