Unraveling the heartbreaking timeline leading up to Gabby Petito’s death
The aforementioned 911 caller told the dispatcher, according to audio provided to news outlets: “We were driving by and a gentleman was slapping a girl… They were running up and down the sidewalk. He started beating her, jumped into the car, and they drove away.”
Another witness at the scene, identified as Chris, wrote a statement to police: for CNNthat the two were “talking to each other aggressively.” Chris said he thought he heard Petito tell Laundry, “Why do you have to be so mean?”
Hulls, a Park Service ranger and director of visitor and resource conservation for Arches National Park, admitted she has a bad feeling about the overall situation between Petito and Laundry.
“I was probably more open with her than I should have been,” Hulls said. Deseret News. “I begged her to reconsider the relationship, asked if she was happy in her relationship with him, and essentially said that this was an opportunity for her to find a different path, to change her life. She had a lot of separation anxiety from him, I honestly thought if anything was going to change it would be after they got home to Florida.”
And then she heard that a body matching the description of the missing woman had been found.
“To be honest, I have not reviewed my body camera footage from that night,” the ranger said. “It’s hard to think about it now because I feel like I could have said more to help her. It’s hard not to doubt myself, and I wish I could say more or find the right words to make her believe she deserved better.”
