Clancy, a top executive at a global technology company, according to his campaign website, defeated several other Republicans to compete to succeed Rep. Jennifer Wexton, D-Va., who is retiring at the end of her term.

The outgoing Democrat in Clancy’s district, Wexton, announced her retirement after being diagnosed with a debilitating form of Parkinson’s called progressive supranuclear palsy.
The congressional district comprises the densely populated outer suburbs of Washington, DC in Loudoun County, as well as the independent city of Manassas and the rural counties of Fauquier and Rappahannock.
Wexton’s seat was held for decades by Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., from the Reagan Revolution to the Obama era, when he was succeeded by moderate Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., a former aide.

In 2018, Wexton defeated Comstock and the district has become increasingly blue since then.
The Cook Political Report rates the district D+6, predicting likely Democratic control in November.
