In response to backlash, including an online petition calling for ESPN to reconsider its decision, the network declined to fire Harry.

“ESPN, with the support of the Tillman Foundation, is honoring Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, in particular, for the work of the Invictus Games Foundation as it celebrates its 10th anniversary of helping to heal service members and veterans around the world through the power of sport,” an ESPN spokesperson said in a statement released by Athletic.

“While we understand that not everyone will agree with every nominee chosen for any award, the Invictus Games Foundation does incredible work and ESPN believes it is a cause worth celebrating.”
