Seeing the stars of Top Gun then and now will take your breath away
Astrophysicist and civilian Top Gun instructor Charlie Blackwood smittens Maverick, and their love story becomes a cinematic one for the ages… or at least the 1980s, since McGillis says she wasn’t invited to appear in the sequel. And she almost left for the first film.
“I didn’t want to do it,” she said. recalled in The keeper in 2001. “But since I did WitnessI owed Paramount another movie, and my agent said, “You have to do this.” I looked at him and said, “This is like a Western in the sky — I don’t want to do this.” It wasn’t about acting, it was about being a cartoon character. You know what I mean? I could have done it blindfolded. I was grateful that it gave me opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. But I showed up for work, did my part, hung out with a bunch of guys, played baseball, and went home. It was like camp. Why they hired me, I’ll never know.”
McGillis then portrayed a prosecutor seeking justice for a rape victim, played by the future Oscar winner. Jodie Foster V AccusedShe went on to play roles such as Baby, North and a lot of small films and TV movies, but she also opened a restaurant in Florida with her second husband, a yacht magnate, Fred Tillmanin the 1990s and pushed acting into the background.
She has two daughters with Tillman, whom she divorced in 2002. She came out as a lesbian in 2009 and had a civil marriage ceremony with Melanie Leys in 2010, but they split up the following year.
“I think my priorities in life just changed,” McGillis said Entertainment tonight in 2019 from his home in North Carolina. “It wasn’t a big decision that I made when I left. [acting]”It’s just that other things have become more important. I love acting, I love what I do, I love doing theater, but I don’t know. For me, my relationships with other people have become much more important than my relationship with fame.”
