Cyclist Andre Drege dies aged 25 after his bike crashes into a mountain
The cycling community is in mourning after a tragic accident.
Andre DroegeA professional cyclist from Norway has died after losing control of his bike during the final stage of the Tour of Austria, race organisers have confirmed. He was 25.
“On Saturday 6 July after a very serious accident on the descent of the Grossglockner on the fourth stage of the Tour of Austria,” the statement was published on social networks read: “Andre crashed and suffered serious injuries.”
The note said: “Our entire team is devastated by this tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers are with Andre’s family and loved ones, his Coop-Repsol team, at this incredibly difficult time.”
Drege’s team also confirmed his death on social mediaadding: “Andre’s family have asked not to be disturbed as they mourn their loss and we ask that their wishes be respected.”
In accordance with local outlet Kronen ZeitungA rescue helicopter responded to the accident, which occurred when Droege crashed on the descent from the Grossglockner to Heiligenblut. Following his death, the final stage of the race was cancelled and cyclists took part in a memorial ride in his honour instead.
